Why visit Ghizer
Ghizer is Gilgit-Baltistan’s westernmost district, and its quietest. Instead of forts and glaciers, the draw here is a string of turquoise lakes — Khalti, Phander, Handrap — strung along the road toward Shandur Pass, the world’s highest polo ground and host of the annual Shandur Polo Festival. Side valleys like Yasin and Ishkoman see a fraction of the visitors that Hunza or Skardu do, which is exactly the appeal for travelers looking for meadows, lakes and open road over crowds and checklists.
Six essential experiences
Phander (Phandar) Lake & Valley
Often called Gilgit-Baltistan's most scenic valley, with a long turquoise lake framed by green meadows — quieter and greener than the higher-altitude lakes further east.
Khalti Lake
A roadside lake near Gupis, popular for trout fishing and an easy stop on the way toward Phander and Shandur.
Shandur Pass
The 'Roof of the World,' at 3,700 meters, home to the world's highest polo ground and July's Shandur Polo Festival between Chitral and Gilgit teams.
Yasin Valley
A historic valley with its own dialect and centuries of local rule, and the starting point for treks toward Thui Pass and the mountains beyond.
Handrap Lake
A smaller, quieter lake near Phander, worth the short detour for travelers who want the scenery without any of the crowds.
Gupis
Ghizer's main town and the usual gateway to the district, with a small fort and the last reliable services before the road climbs toward Phander and Shandur.

Best time to visit
June to September is best, once the road toward Shandur is clear of snow. The Shandur Polo Festival is typically held in July. Spring suits the lower valleys around Gupis if you’re not continuing further.
Getting around
Ghizer is reached by road from Gilgit, about 2 hours to Gupis. Roads beyond Gupis toward Phander and Shandur are rougher and best covered with a 4×4; Yasin and Ishkoman are separate detours off the main route.
Where to stay
Gupis and Phander have small guesthouses and basic hotels — fewer options than Hunza or Skardu, so it’s worth booking ahead or planning overnight stops as part of a loop toward Shandur or on to Chitral.
