Nagar sits just across the river from Hunza, but trades its neighbor’s tourist crowds for glaciers, high meadows and some of the best trekking access in the Karakoram. This is where climbers set out for Rakaposhi and Diran, where Rush Lake sits among the highest alpine lakes on earth, and where villages like Minapin and Hopper look straight up at ice fields tumbling down from 7,000-metre peaks. It’s quieter than Hunza, closer to the mountains, and increasingly the base of choice for travelers who want the Karakoram without the queues.

Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek
One of the most accessible base camp treks in the Karakoram, reached from Minapin village in a long day hike or overnight camp, with Rakaposhi's 7,788m summit filling the skyline the whole way.
Hopper Glacier & Valley
Apple and apricot orchards give way to glacier ice within a short walk in Hopper, one of the easiest glacier viewpoints to reach in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Nagar Khas (Thol Fort)
The former seat of the Nagar princely state, this fort-palace complex is a window into the valley's history before it merged with Pakistan.
Minapin Village
The trailhead for Rakaposhi Base Camp and a good base for shorter glacier walks, with some of the valley's most dramatic mountain views right from the guesthouse porch.
Barpu & Hisper Glaciers
For serious trekkers, the Barpu and Hisper glaciers link Nagar to the wider Karakoram ice fields, with routes running all the way to Hispar La and beyond.

Best time to visit
May to September is best for trekking, once the high passes and glacier trails clear of winter snow. April brings blossom season lower in the valley. Winters are cold, and many higher routes become inaccessible.
Getting around
Nagar is a short drive across the river from Karimabad (Hunza), or reached directly along the Karakoram Highway through Chalt. A jeep is useful for trailheads like Minapin and Hopper; treks from there continue on foot.
Where to stay
Minapin and Hopper have the valley’s main guesthouses, both doubling as trailheads for their namesake treks. Chalt and Nagar Khas offer quieter, more local stays for those not trekking.
