WHY VISIT SOUTH AFRICA
Six essential experiences
Table Mountain & Cape Town
A cable car or hike to the summit of this UNESCO World Heritage sandstone massif anchors the Cape Peninsula, with Boulders Beach's penguins and Cape of Good Hope nearby the essential stop in any Table Mountain Cape Town visit.
Robben Island
A former apartheid-era prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years, now a UNESCO site with tours led by former political prisoners one of South Africa's most powerful experiences.
Kruger National Park Safari
Self-drive or guided game drives across nearly 20,000 square kilometers deliver a genuine Big Five safari South Africa experience, with the H4-1 road along the Sabie River widely rated the park's best for sightings.
Garden Route Coastal Drive
Knysna's lagoon, Tsitsikamma's Storms River suspension bridge, and Plettenberg Bay's beaches string together one of the world's most scenic coastal routes.
Stellenbosch & Cape Winelands
Over 200 wine estates set against mountain scenery make a Cape Winelands tour essential, producing Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon that rank among the Southern Hemisphere's best.
Hermanus Whale Watching
Southern Right Whales calve in Walker Bay from June through November, visible directly from a 12-kilometer cliff path during Hermanus whale watching season no boat required.

South Africa is best known for Big Five wildlife safaris, Cape Town’s Table Mountain and coastline, Nelson Mandela and the end of apartheid, its Winelands, and the scenic Garden Route.
Most international visitors fly into Cape Town International Airport or OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Most Western passport holders (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) can enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
Ten to fourteen days is the recommended minimum to combine Cape Town and the Winelands with either the Garden Route or a Kruger safari. Seven days suits one region well but not both.
It depends on the goal — May to September for Kruger safaris, November to March for Cape Town beaches, and June to November for whale watching at Hermanus.
Cape Town’s Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, and Kruger’s main camps draw heavy crowds in peak season. The Drakensberg Mountains and smaller Garden Route towns stay considerably quieter.
